CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The land grew hilly as we approached the Caen an Sin. Some believed it was the earth reacting to the thunderous anger of the mabs, crying out and trying to escape into the sky.

When we approached the top of a high hill and the vast fortress of the Caen an Sin came into view, Danny went tense beside me. I knew what he was feeling, because even I could feel it, to a lesser degree. The oppressive weight in the air. The knowledge that something greater was nearby. Something we shouldn’t linger near for too long.

If I could feel it, I could only imagine how the mabs’ presence would affect a more fragile species like humans.

I squeezed Danny’s hand. “We shouldn’t have to stay too long, Danny,” I told him, then glanced over to see how pale he looked, his features drawn. My guts tightened.

“We don’t have to do this,” I said, trying to gentle my voice. “We can just go back. We can leave.”

“No.” Danny’s voice was determined despite how uneasy he felt. “I want to do this. We’ve come all this way.”

I raised our linked hands into my hood, pressing my lips to the back of his. “Brave human.”

He snorted. “Or just stubborn. And stupid.”

“You’re neither.” I kissed his knuckles again before letting our hands drop. “If you’re sure you want to do this…”

“Yes.” Danny let out a hard breath and started walking, tugging on my hand. “I’m going to make sure you’re stuck with me for the next four thousand years.”

I ducked my head, smiling as we descended the hill. The fortress was so massive that the end of it wasn’t even visible, swallowed up by thick fog that hung over the sea. It was impossible to say how huge it was—how far back it extended—but if it housed the two mabs, it had to be unfathomably large.

At the bottom of the hill, there was a broken stone path that looked worn with time. As we got closer, I could see the faint remnants of symbols carved into each thick stone, barely visible now.

The Caen an Sin looked even more monumental from ground level. On either side of it, the Yawning Sea crashed against the cliffside, as though it had devoured all of the land except for the narrow stretch that connected what would otherwise be an island to the mainland.

The fortress itself was made from stone so black it sucked in all the light around it. Even though it was the mild season, the sky was still a pale pink-grey here, and the waters were tumultuous. When the mabs were fighting and the storms came, the sky was almost as dark as constant night, and the roar of the sea was unbearably loud beneath the thunderous crashes of the mabs trying to kill each other.

Danny let out a quiet, trembling breath. “It’s big.”

He was so nervous, his hand damp with sweat within mine. My chest squeezed, and I drew us to a stop so I could turn Danny to face me.
